Tax collection to be given to HK firm?

The Hong Kong based McKensey & Company is to be given the task of collecting all taxes for the Department of Inland Revenue, Trade unions allege.

Cabinet approval has been given for the move on a plan by minister Ravi Karunanayake, a spokesman for the inland revenue trade unions joint committee told Sri Lanka Mirror.

The company is to be paid between 12 and 15 million dollars (Rs. 1,830 million) on agreement to raise tax revenue by 500 million dollars within five years, said the spokesman.

The present annual tax income is Rs. 560 billion and it goes up each year at the rate of between 60 and 70 million rupees.

To protest this move, officers of the department will report sick on the coming Monday.
