SLPA initiates separate probe into Port fire

The ministry of Ports & Shipping says that the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has begun separate investigations with regard to the fire that broke out at the Colombo port yesterday (29).

In a media release, the ministry also clarifies that the fire had broken out at a stack of scrap rubber tubes at the Colombo Port’s Hyundai private site at around 1.30pm. These rubber tubes are used to pump sand to the land from the sea, it adds.

Earlier, it was reported that the fire broke out at the Eastern Terminal of the port.

In few media reports it appeared that the fire broke out at the Eastern Terminal of the port yesterday (29). But this news is incorrect. The fire broke out at the Colombo Port’s Hyundai private site at around 1.30pm. The fire occurred at a stack of scrap rubber tubes. These rubber tubes are used to pump sand to the land from the sea.

'There was no disturbance for the day to day activities of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority or for the Colombo Port terminals. The private site is located outside the shipping operation area of the Colombo Port. No property of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority is lost or no personal injuries were reported due to the fire,' the media release further says.
