“The activities of the police these days is nothing but big talk and media circuses,” the PM had said recently in the presence of Minister Lakshman Kiriella and several senior ministers.
He said this in response to responses made by the Lleader of the House Minister Lakshman Kiriella, regarding the murder of businessman Mohamed Suleiman.
“Sir now the drug menace has reduced, but we cannot be satisfied with regard to the abductions and murders taking place. People are asking us if the police is asleep. We will have to do something about this soon.. If not it will reflect badly on the government,” Kiliella had said initiating the conversation.
The PM had responded saying that several other ministers too had raised this issue with him. He said that there was no point in the police celebrating ‘Police Day’ without first ensuring the safety of the people.
He also said that the primary responsibility of the police is to ensure a safe environment where the people of this country can live without fear.
Wickremesinghe said that he would summon the police hierarchy to Temple Trees, in order to discuss measures to curb the rate of crimes in the country.
He also instructed Kiriella to inform Minister of Law & Order and Southern Development Sagala Ratnayake of the current conduct of the police.
