Officers of the Elections Commission who went to Nittambuwa to take down a portrait of President Mahinda Rajapaksa that was strung up near the traffic lights signal in violation of the Election Law were obstructed by deputy minister Sarana Gunawardena and his supporters, election monitor the Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) said.

It said that despite numerous complaints Police had done nothing to take down that cut-outs of the President in accordance with the election Law and following more complaints officers from the Elections Department had decided to act yesterday (December 26) when they faced the wrath of minister Gunawardena.

It has been reported that a convoy of three vehicles bearing registration numbers WP BP 5548, WP KD 5500 and WP PE 6884 used by minister Gunawardena and local politicians had abused and insulted the officers from the Election's Department and CaFFE.

CaFFE also said that police officers who arrived on the scene did nothing to stop Gunawardena and his supporters from preventing and obstructing officers of the Elections Department from doing their duty in accordance with the Law.
