He is said to be connected to a financial irregularity of around Rs. two million and the faking of documents in connection with the renovation and construction of the Puttalam SP’s office and the Wanathavilluwa ASP’s office buildings.
At the time of the said fraud, he had been in charge of the Puttalam division.
The special investigation unit on August 11 arrested the chief accountant of the Puttalam and Chilaw SP’s office and a sergeant, who are in remand custody until August 25.
They have given a statement to the effect that the frauds had taken place with the knowledge of DIG Sungahawatte.
Investigations have revealed that he had carried out the construction work, while submitting documents to the name of a certain contractor.
The payment cheques had been issued to the contractor’s name, but the DIG had got a sergeant to cash them.
