Dates cannot be fixed to hold the local government polls under the existing LG elections act, reports say.

Elections commission chairman Mahinda Deshapriya has informed the LG ministry about this in writing.

The act has around 60 legal, technical and political issues.

The main legal issue is on how to accept candidates for multi-member seats.

Demarcation of the boundaries of LG bodies is another key concern.

By last week, demarcation of boundaries of LG bodies of Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Mannar, Nuwara Eliya and Matale had not begun.
