UNP COPE members try to embarrass auditor general Featured

The prime minister’s side has strongly criticized the auditor general’s report submitted to COPE with regard to former Central Bank governor Arjun Mahendran.

The AG came under heavy criticism by the PM’s side when he was summoned to COPE last Friday to further give details regarding the treasury bond issue.

Although senior CB officials are in agreement with the observations and conclusions contained in the report, UNP members Ajith P. Perera, Sujeewa Senasinghe and Harshana Rajakaruna tried to embarrass the AG, another member of the committee told Sri Lanka Mirror.

There, the AG stressed that it was his duty to inquire into and report as to whether the bond issue has caused any losses for the government, and stressed he has followed the due procedure when doing so.

After considering submissions, the COPE chairman will summon a meeting on August 23 to take a final decision.

Minister Lakshman Kiriella too, has strongly criticized the AG’s report.
