Civil society activists staged a protest in front of Welikada Prison today (08), calling for the release of political prisoners.

The USP, NSSP, SP, NDP parties, Voice of the Left, Equal Rights Movement, Aluth Parapura, CTU and other groups as well as trade union representatives participated.

IUSF former convener Najith Indika alleged ex-LTTE leaders were enjoying freedom, while those who had done their bidding were behind bars.

Protestors noted their human rights have been violated due to no court action being taken while their being kept in custody for long periods.

Meanwhile, 84 Tamil inmates of Magazine and Anuradhapura Prisons are on a fast since this morning, prison spokesman Thushara Upuldeniya said.

They are calling for the speeding up of court proceedings against them and want an amnesty given.
