Akila catches 22 drivers using ministry cars to run night taxi service Featured

Twenty two drivers attached to the education ministry have been suspended by minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.

They have been accused of using ministry-owned vehicles for taxi services in the night.

The revelation came after an incident one night as the minister was on his way home only with his driver, when another driver overtook his car and blocked its path.

The driver of that vehicle has abused the minister’s driver, and the Kariyawasam had a look at the assailant, and identified him to be a driver of his ministry.

Immediately, the minister complained to Talangama police, and also phoned the transport manager of his ministry.

As the manager was asleep at the time, the Kariyawasam requested police to investigate the use of vehicles at his ministry.

An investigation revealed the drivers were using ministry vehicles to run taxi services in the night.

At the time of the investigation, 22 cars had been unaccounted for.
