AG’s Dept. drags its feet over student killings

AG’s Dept. drags its feet over student killings Featured

Justice is further delayed due to the Attorney General’s Department not extending assistance to the CID to investigate the abduction of six schoolchildren for ransom and their subsequent murder at Trincomalee Navy camp, it is alleged.

A suspect by the name Navy Sampath is under arrest over the killings, and other suspects have also been identified.

However, the AG’s Department is not giving instructions for their arrest.

The related court process has already consumed more than two years, and a key witness to the killngs K.C. Welagedera, also a Navy officer, has been punished by the Navy over another offence.

The state counsel appearing for the Dept. was additional solicitor general Shavendra Fernando.

However, he is the legal advisor to the Navy too, and the CID alleged he did not carry out proceedings against the Navy.

The AG has made inquiries and found that Fernando has not obtained his permission to give advice to the Navy.

He was to told choose one, and he left the Dept.

However, his successor, ASG Dappula Livera is very close to Fernando, and the CID is yet to receive the required assistance.

When the case was taken up last Wednesday, Livera did not appear on behalf of the Dept.

Therefore, the CID is unable to arrest suspects in this case as well as several others for which he has connections.
