This will be the first LNG power plant in Sri Lanka.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Management (CEM) has decided to call for tenders to build the plant. Accordingly, the committee has directed the Ceylon Electricity Board to call for Tenders and find a suitable investor for the project by November.
Reports also say that in addition to this LNG plant, it has also been proposed to build an LNG in Sampur under Indian funds and another in Hambantota as a commercial project of China.
In addition, it is said that Japan too, has given the nod to build either a coal or LNG plant.
