The Welikada prison complex comprises four sections, and a proposal made by the Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka, to acquire the land belonging to B.C.C Lanka Company near the Supreme Court complex to construct the remand prison was approved by cabinet, the Government said today.

Most prisons in Sri Lanka are located in key towns and on land with high economic value.

The current Government, under the program of relocating prisons in the country, has decided to relocate the Welikada prison and its sub sections.
