Minister Ravi Karunanayake told the media yesterday that these prices would remain applicable for a long period.

The commodities include sugar, dhal, potatoes, onions, canned salmon, green grams, garlic and dried sprats.

On the previous day, prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said the VAT would not be imposed on 15 essential commodities.

He said the VAT was not to be blamed for the high prices of essential commodities.

Further relief would be given if prices went higher, and raids will be conducted to nab traders who sell over the ceiling prices, he added.
