Northern provincial councilor Subramaniam Pasupathipillai has made the suggestion to the committee at its meeting last week, gagana.lk reports.
He has noted these war memorials would continue to haunt the lives of the people living in the area.
TNA MP S. Sridharan said when contacted that the security forces still occupied around 40 per cent of the town’s civilian-owned land, although the people had returned since 2010.
The mentality of the Tamil people is under severe pressure by these war memorials, he said.
He also charged that Sinhalese have been settled in traditionally-Tamil Kilinochchi town.
