The CWE has laid down a condition for consumers to get sugar at Rs. 87 per kilo, that they should buy goods with a worth of Rs. 1,000, ‘Sathhanda’ newspaper rreports.

In its outlets in Badulla, this condition is Rs. 500.

Consumers are worried by this condition laid down by a state instituton, which is a violation of clause 16 of the Consumer Affairs Act no. 9 of 2003.

In the open market, sugar is sold at nearly Rs. 120 a kilo.

The newspaper says the CWE, faced with a severe financial crisis, is trying to promote its sales through sugar.

Attempts to contact responsible officials failed.
