Talks on to amend VAT

Talks on to amend VAT Featured

The prime minister and the finance minister are discussing an amendment to the VAT, says cabinet spokesman Gayantha Karunatilake.

He told the media yesterday (29) that the existing taxes were negligible when compared to the excessive taxes that had been in force during the previous regime.

He asked any party unfairly treated due to the VAT to complain to the government.

There is an organized smear campaign to claim the taxes would affect the masses, he said.

Acting minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said changes would be introduced to VAT on private health services.

The VAT is not applicable to local farming products, fresh milk, bread, chicken, eggs, vegetables, fruits as well as private transport, education, insurance and the electricity bill, he said.
