Gunawardena, who was remanded over several charges including corruption, is currently released on bail.
Yesterday, we revealed that Vass Gunawardena and his wife were granted special police protection by UNP chairman - minister Malik Samarawickrama.
The revelation was made during a meeting a group of civil society representatives had with the president and the prime minister to discuss the term of Central Bank governor Arjun Mahendran.
One of the representatives said there was talk that the president was trying to save the corrupt and has given MSD security to those out on bail.
Strongly rejecting the allegation, the president immediately telephoned the IGP and inquired from him as to how Sajin Vaas had received police security.
The police chief answered that the request had come from Samarawickrama, an answer which left the civil society representatives with much disbelief.
