Controversy surrounds the details given by the AG’s report on state debt on the 2015 finance ministry report.
The TUs collective of the AG’s Department said the people stood to lose by the absence of an audit act to prevent abuse of state funds.
Politicians were not getting it adopted for political gain, minimizing powers to prevent fraud and corruption, they noted.
The AG is the next authority after the chief justice, and ministers do not have the right to question an independent personality like him, said the TUs.
The AG does not impose limits on state’s obtaining credit, but when limits are exceeded, he cannot ignore it to make not mention about it.
The TUs said they were not aware of the accuracy of certain reports that the prime minister had summoned the AG to Temple Trees and reprimanded him over the matter.
This morning, AG Gamini Wijesinghe and finance minister Ravi Karunayake were to have a special meeting, which is rather controversial as the AG’s Department is an independent institution.
