At today’s (15) cabinet news briefing in Colombo, he said there was no truth to reports that the FCID was to be disbanded.
The FCID was an institution set up in the interim of forming a separate body to investigate major financial fraud, as per the January 08 promises list, he said.
When these investigations go to international level, stronger laws are required, and the new institution will have such powers, said Senaratne.
However, there are no barriers to extend the FCID’s term as its investigations are yet to be completed, added the spokesman.
CB governor should be removed
When asked if Arjun Mahendran would be given another term as the Central Bank governor, Senaratne said his view was that he should removed.
He said he had been opposing Mahendran’s appointment from the outset, and hoped the ‘yahapaalana’ regime would take a decision demonstrative of good governance.
However, minister Lakshman Kiriella has said that there would be no change to the CB governor position.
