Attempt to silence media exposing the elephant saga

A group of lawyers are taking measures to handover a petition to the Chief Justice, urging him to order a CID probe on media institutions and journalists who are critical of court orders made with regard to individuals facing charges of illegally possessing elephants, reports say.

The lawyers are of the view that criticising such court orders could even lead to the loss of public faith in the law and creates a sense of disregard of the judiciary.

Last Thursday, three judges and a group of lawyers have met at the 'Moon River' hotel in Thimbirigasyaya to discuss measures to be taken against press criticisms of judges.

There, they have decided to handover a petition to the CJ.

It has been discussed to task President's Counsel Hemantha Warnakulasuriya with formulating the petition and obtaining the lawyers' signatures.

According to reports the petition is to chiefly target the 'Ravaya' newspaper.
