At the Cabinet meeting on Feb. 11, 2015, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe to establish a Secretariat for investigating into large scale corruption and malpractices that had been reported to have taken place during the previous government and to take legal action against such corruption and malpractices and to make recommendations to prevent such corruption and malpractices taking place in the future.
In addition to this approval was also given to establish a Financial Crimes Investigation Division under the supervision of the Inspector General of Police to investigate into large scale financial transactions including illegal money laundering activities.
The FCID was established in terms of the provisions of Section 55 of the Police Ordinance, with the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers and it operates under the exclusive supervision and direction of the Inspector General of Police.
Complaints to the FCID should be made to this secretariat, which sees to the proper documentation of these cases before directing them to the attention of the IGP or to the CID or Bribery Commission for further investigations.
At the present, this secretariat has directed 325 dossiers pertaining to large scale corruption, 600 dossiers pertaining to administrative issues to the respective institutions.
The term of the secretariat ends on June 30, 2016 and the staff ID earlier expired on April 08, 2016.
