Drill or test caused fire at Salawa camp?

Drill or test caused fire at Salawa camp? Featured

There is suspicion that a fire had started during an emergency drill or a test of fire extinguishers at the ammunition dump at Salawa Army camp in Kosgama, defence secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi told the media in Colombo today (07).

A final conclusion can be reached once the investigation report is received, he said.

However, the government analyst visited the facility for the second day today, but could not carry out his investigation, as sporadic blasts still occurred.

Also, military officers there had delayed producing the soldier who witnessed the starting of the fire, for the CID to record a statement from him today.

The worst damage from the fire has been caused to the Ranavirugama located behind the ammo dump, where most of the houses have been completely destroyed.

The total loss could run into many billions of rupees.

Conducting an estimate of the destroyed firearms, artillery and multi-barrel ammunition could take several days.

Several high rise buildings located within the camp, including the six storey volunteer corps headquarters building facing the high level road and the location of a big rubber plantation nearby have prevented loss of life and worse damage to property.

The main building of the camp and the high-rise buildings, and the filling station have all been extensively damaged.

Business establishments located near the camp too, have been severely affected.

A fire continued even this afternoon in one factory, and its manager K. Bandarnayake said they have suffered a big financial loss.
