Parliamentary groups of the government and the UNP are to have separate meetings to discuss the no-confidence motion against finance minister Ravi Karunanayake, reports say.

Government MPs will meet tomorrow (06) at the presidential secretariat, under the chairmanship of president Maithripala Sirisena.

Later in the day, prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will chair a meeting of the UNP MPs to discuss the matter.

The no-confidence motion, signed by 37 MPs of the joint opposition based on several accusations, was handed over to the speaker on March 24, and is to be debated on June 08.

The TNA and the JVP are yet to decide whom to support in this issue.

Joint opposition’s Bandula Gunawardena has said SLFP MPs in the government should vote in favour of the no-confidence motion.

Karunanayake’s inefficient financial administration has placed the public into severe hardships, he said.
