This is a violation of human rights of the average person, and a complaint will be lodged with the Human Rights Commission today (01) against it, says president of the organization Ranjith Withanage.
The complaint will request that taxes be lowered in over to enable an average person to buy a vehicle, he says.
Commenting on remarks by certain government politicians, he says the only requirement to buy a vehicle is the possession of a valid driving license, and that authorities cannot manipulate laws to suit their whims.
Meanwhile, deputy minister Ashok Abeysinghe says the vehicle taxes and the VAT will be applicable only for a short duration.
The government has no intention of inconveniencing the people, and the taxes had to be imposed due to the fault of the former administration, he said during an inspection tour of Hatton CTB depot.
