Tax raise intended to inconvenience president

The ‘good governance’ regime had placed president Maithripala Sirisena into severe inconvenience by intentionally raising taxes on Japanese vehicles at a time when he was on a tour of Japan, alleges UPFA spokesman, MP Sisira Jayakody.

The government was disregarding implications and taking decisions as the president was meeting Japanese entrepreneurs, he charges.

It is clear who is ruling this coalition regime, he says.

Raising by around Rs. 7.5 million the tax on Honda Prius, mostly used by foreigners touring the country, a conspiracy is being hatched to sabotage the tourism industry, say Jayakody.

As a result, vehicle hiring charges will be doubled, between Colombo and Katunayake airport to Rs. 8,000 and between Colombo and the south to Rs. 30,000, he was quoted as saying by ‘Divaina.’
