SLFP Mahinda faction submits 10 proposals to Maithri! Featured

A group of academics from the SLFP Mahinda Rajapaksa faction has formulated a set of 10 proposals and handed over to president Maithripala Sirisena, asking that they be placed before the country as policies of the party.

After its failures at a separate May Day event, the Mahinda faction has abandoned its idea of forming a new party and has been trying to reach a compromise with the Maithri faction.

It has even expressed a desire to join with the national government of which the UNP and the Maithri faction are the members.

The Mahinda faction has noted the government was following only the UNP policies, and asked that the SLFP should submit its own proposals to reach a policy understanding with the UNP.

The main proposals are:

1. An economic plan to develop the country (promoting economic relations with China and formulating a compact economic plan)
2. Action with regard to war-related incidents (clearing the military of wrongdoing and giving a general pardon for LTTE members, giving relief and granting freedom gradually for those found guilty and serving prison terms, giving punishment through a local investigation with regard to human rights issues not directly related to the war)
3. Resolution of the national issue (starting a dialogue for a long-term solution, vesting the provincial councils with the powers as per the 13th amendment, a mechanism under which the majority party representatives get together with the executive and exercise powers for the development of the respective province, a mechanism to grant land to the landless through a national planning commission inclusive of local government representatives)
4. Executive presidency (without abolishing the executive presidency, its powers should be curtailed and the electoral system should be changed)
5. Indo-Lanka trade agreement (which should be defeated as it is disadvantageous to Sri Lanka. A new agreement advantageous to both countries is needed)
6. Eliminating corruption (preventing harassment of the accused by investigating allegations not directly linked to serious financial fraud. Only the direct accusations with regard to identified serious acts of corruption and fraud should be pursued)

The proposals also include on a country free of poison, transport, power crisis, uniforms, education and employment.
