The National Environmental Organisation has decided to back Common Opposition Candidate Maithripala Sirisena at next month's Presidential election, but the former Health Minister was also in for a rude surprise when he found that the air-conditioning system at the Mahaweli Centre in Colombo where he was welcomed was shut down.
When organisers of the welcome ceremony inquired why the air conditioning system had been switched off they were told it was done on the orders of the secretary of Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
But after employees and organisers protested the shutdown, the air-conditioning system was switched on.
At the function, Maithripala Sirisena promised to set up a national environment policy after installing an advisory council.
