Evacuation warning for residents close to the Kelani

People living in Colombo near the Kelani have been asked to vacate their homes, as the water level of the river is rising due to continuous heavy rains in the hill-country.

Security forces commander for the western province Maj. Gen. Sudantha Ranasinghe says those faced with minor flooding should evacuate to safe, temporary shelter prepared for them.

People living in Kaduwela to lower elevations should especially be cautious, he says.

Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe too asks the affected people to leave their homes, and promises a security arrangement from this morning (20) for the protection of their properties.

Addressing the media at Temple Trees, he said the people would be assisted to rebuild their homes and lives and also that a new disaster management plan would be prepared to face future situations.

The Irrigation Department says it will take several days for the floodwaters in the Kelani Valley area to recede.

Its directress Prema Hettiarachchi says they would remain vigilant of the water level of the Kelani.
