Parliament has adopted regulations that double the total number of members elected to local government bodies to 8,825, of which 2,206, or 25 per cent, should be women, reports say.

Local government legal officer Gayani Prematilake says these changes have been brought about as per the LG elections amendment act no. 22 of 2012 as amended by act no. 01 of 2016.

Every contestant party should submit separate lists of female nominees, who would not be fielded at the polls, but will be appointed on the basis of the votes obtained by their respective parties.
