MR to visit Uganda as special guest! Featured

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is to attend the re-inauguration ceremony of Ugandan President - Yoweri Museveni.

Speaking to 'BBC Sandeshaya', Rajapaksa's private secretary - Uditha Lokubandara said that the former President has already accepted the invitation.

Meanwhile, a request made by Rajapaksa's second son - Yoshitha, to accompany his father, has been rejected by the judiciary.

The Kaduwela Magistrate has already ordered that the passports of Yoshitha Rajapaksa and five others be impounded in connection with allegations of money laundering at or through the CSN television company.

Dictatorship

Rajapaksa's visit to Uganda takes place amid protests by the Ugandan opposition, who charge that the country's recent election was rigged.

Tensions have festered since Museveni won the February election with 60 percent of the vote, extending his 30-year rule by another five-year term. He will be sworn in on May 12.

Activists charge Museveni of dictatorship and his rule being marred by corruption.

Museveni visited Sri Lanka in 2012 on the invitation of the then President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who visited Uganda later in 2013.
