'Telecom companies charging tax as they wish'

'Telecom companies charging tax as they wish' Featured

The National Movement to Protect Consumer Rights says that telecommunication companies are charging taxes in an arbitrary manner.

The amendments made to Value Added Tax (VAT) had increased call charges and speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror', the movement's President - Ranjith Vithanage says that the taxes charged by different companies differ from each other.

Taxes running upto several percentages, such as 65.6%, 49.6% and 56.6%, are charged by different companies, he added.

Although the VAT was increased, the maximum tax percentage would be 46%, he further says.

The increase of telecommunications charges has already raised public outrage with many reaching over towards social media to vent their anger and disapproval.
