Generators supply electricity to Colombo city

Generators supply electricity to Colombo city Featured

Generators have been installed to supply electricity to Colombo city following the revelation of possible blackouts due to two distribution centres in Fort area being in an unstable situation, reports say.

However, the CEB will run into huge losses as a result of the use of generators.

Three generators have been installed at Gangarama, Nawaloka and Galle Face.

Three years ago, the underground cable 132kv/11kv from Kelanitissa plant to substations F at Fort and E at Kollupitiya malfunctioned.

Wrong repair measures by the engineer-in-charge resulted in the destruction of the cable and the CEB incurring millions of rupees of losses.

However, he has been given a promotion.

On April 19, the security system of the underground cable taking electricity to the two substations went off and supply switched off automatically.

Now, the supply is being made without the automatic switching-off facility and in an emergency, the cable could burst, electricians warn.
