Stronger Act to replace PTA

Stronger Act to replace PTA Featured

Defence Ministry Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi yesterday said the government has decided to bring in a new Act with more powers in relation to national security and law and order and these new laws will replace the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

Addressing a press briefing at the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS), Hettiarachchi said the United Kingdom has a very powerful law for prevention of terrorism which is more powerful than the PTA functioning in Sri Lanka.

He said a number of legal experts are working on preparing the new Act and it will be framed in a way that would deal with compiled with various types of terrorism including cyber crimes. The PTA of 1978 is a law in Sri Lanka. It provides the police with board powers to search, arrest and detain suspects.

It was first enacted as a temporary law in 1979 under the J.R. Jayewardene presidency and made permanent in 1982.
