Decision to remove MR's Army protection, unchanged

Decision to remove MR's Army protection, unchanged Featured

There is no change with regard to the decision to remove the Army security provided to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Defence Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi said.

He was speaking to 'BBC Sandeshaya' from Australia.

At a recent media briefing in Colombo, the Defence Secretary announced this decision, saying that it was illegal to deploy Army personnel for VIP security. He added that the move was part of a wider decision to entrust all VIP protection duties to the Sri Lanka Police.

However, subsequent media reports cited President Maithripala Sirisena as to ordering not to remove the Army security of Rajapaksa.

Speaking further to 'BBC Sandeshaya' on the controversy surrounding this, Mr. Hettiarachchi has said, "The original decision to remove the Army security prevails. Security cannot be provided to them by the Army. Only the PSD and police personnel deployed to provide general security can be assigned.'
