Be enlightened at the IFFC

The second edition of the international film festival of Colombo (IFFC) will be held in Colombo from Nov. 06 onwards under the theme of 'Be Enlightened'.

The announcement was made at a press briefing in Colombo yesterday (07).

The festival will kick off with the Cannes golden palm award winning film 'Dheepan' by renowned French director Jacques Audiard.

The competition, organised by the Directors Guild of Sri Lanka (DGOSL) in collaboration with the National Film Corporation, will be held from Nov. 06 - 11 and will feature many local and foreign films which will be shown free of charge.

Speaking, Festival Director - Asoka Handagama said "basically what we expect this year is the freedom to organise the festival in our way."

He said that they would probably not include 'Dheepan' as their opening movie "if there wasn't this kind of a change."

He added that they are "challenging the borders of freedom of expression" through this year's festival.

Noting that this year's festival will feature some challenging movies for the audience as well as for the government, Handagama says 'in that sense it will be a leap from last year.'

Top Asian films to compete at IFFColombo :
The IFFC has become as a competitive film festival for this year with a newly launched section titled ' Asian Competition'. The highly acclaimed ten movies from Asian region countries will be shortlisted to compete for the most prestigious award of the festival.

Mosaic of Sri Lankan new cinema- best film to be judged by a NETPAC jury :
With the objective of appreciating the local film directors at the festival, a fresh section named ' Mosaic of Sri Lankan New Cinema Competition' has been introduced to the festival from the year of 2015. The most cinematic movie of the year will bag the 'Cinema of Tomorrow Award' which will be named by a NETPAC appointed jury.

Retrospectives of Veteran Film Makers :
The renowned Indian film personality Adoor Gopalakrishnan as well as Serbian movie icon Emir Kusturica are felicitated at IFFC 2015 with a screening of their outstanding movies.

Cinema from the World to include, Palm De Or winner Deepan by Audiard, Golden Bear winner Taxi by Jafar Panai, Eisenstein in Guanajuato by Peter Greenway

With the purpose of giving wide cinematic experience to Sri Lankan audience, more than 50 globally acclaimed movies will be screened at IFFC attached to world cinema
section. Among that movies, Cannes golden palm award winning film 'Dheepan' directed
by Jacques Audiard, Berlin golden bear award winning film 'Taxi' by Jafar Panahi, Eisenstein in Guanajuato by world cinema icon Peter Greenaway and Sils Maria by Olivier Assayas will be highly praised by the audience.

Documentary and Short Film corner :
Ceylon Theatres to honor 4 Best Sri Lankan Shorts with Regal Award and screening chances at the Regal cinema

Ceylon Theatres Pvt Ltd ,the main theatre partner of the IFFC is ready to felicitate the four best Sri Lankan short movie makers with the 'Regal Award' at closing ceremony night. The winners will have a rare chance to screen their movies at Regal theatre which is one of the oldest and biggest cinema theatre in Sri Lanka.

French Film Corner : a gift from France :
Yoshimoto to present Japanese cinematic Flavour.

The IFFC in association with Okinawa International Movie Festival will create a cinematic path for movie lovers to grab Japanese cinematic flavor.

The bunch of most acclaimed French movies will be presented to the festival viewers as a cinematic gift from the Embassy of France in Sri Lanka.

Three Master Classes and a Workshop :
IFFCOLOMBO 2015 is pleasure to present 3 master classes and a workshop and each session will be conducted by a renowned personality in that field.

British Council to host Alby James, the „Bond‟ movie producer for a Master Class on How to bring your film to the world.

Mr. Alby James who was the former Head of Development for EON Productions ( the Production house of the Bond Movies) will conduct the production master class themed about ''How to bring your film to the world'' – At Sri Lanka Foundation

Prof. Dragan Milinovich Simon on “Reading Kusturica” and :Looking at Movies”

Prof Dragan Milinkovic Fimon who is an eminent university professor, producer, drama writer and director will conduct two master class based on the themes of ''Looking at Movies'' and ''Reading Kusturica'' – At Sri Lanka Foundation

Sri Lanka Convention Bureau to host Prof. Lydia Trisovic on ''Touch of Glamour'' for media professionals.

Prof Lydia Trisovic who is a master makeup artist and a teacher will conduct a workshop on ''Touch of Glamour'' for professionals in Media and Beauty industry.

At The Hilton Colombo Jurors' Works : films from Competition Jury members :
The three movies from jury members represented the main jury will be lined up to offer a wide variety cinematic experience for the Sri Lankan audience.

Lifetime Achievement Awards
Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Aruna Vasudev to be honored by IFFColombo with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
The acclaimed Indian film director, script writer, and producer Addor Gopalakrishnan and Indian film critic Aruna Vasudev will be honoured at IFFC with a Lifetime achievement award to appreciate their priceless contribution to promote Asian cinema throughout the world.
