Founded by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass, the communications platform posted its first tweet at 12.50 pm on March 21, 2006 and the ability for users to send 140 character long messages with the world was born.

The famous hashtag was born in 2007 and today, the platform facilitates 320 million tweeters sharing of some 500 million tweets a day.

Over the past decade, the free service has become a go-to platform for politicians, entertainers, activists and everyday people and one of the top sources for breaking news as well as opinion sharing on events and issues sparking mass interest and dialog.
