VET makes Wegapitiya, Akbar Bros. rich!

VET makes Wegapitiya, Akbar Bros. rich! Featured

Two companies’ having control over most of the centres issuing vehicle emission test (VET) certificates introduced by the previous Rajapaksa regime, is a wrong economic precedence, say economists.

The VET charge has been increased by the 2016 budget from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 5,000, but the state gets only Rs. 500, or 10 per cent, out of it while the two companies earn big income.

W.K.H. Wegapitiya’s Laugfs Lanka and Akbar Brothers have gained the monopoly courtesy MP Namal Rajapaksa, a key figure in the previous regime, it is alleged.

Issuing of VET certificates began on 01 November 2008 from Colombo district, and expanded to other parts later.

It is being carried out under the supervision of the Department of Motor Vehicles, and headquartered at the department’s premises.

According to reports reaching Sri Lanka Mirror, its head is a retired officer.

By 2014, Sri Lanka had 5,633,234 motor vehicles.
