Indrajith Coomaraswamy appointed CBSL governor

President Maithripala Sirisena has appointed Sri Lankan economist - Dr. Indrajith Coomaraswamy as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka from next Monday.

In a Tweet, the President said that the appointment was made having consulted all relevant parties.

The official appointment of Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy will take place on Monday.

Meanwhile, the President’s Media Division stated that the decision was taken subsequent to a discussion held between the President and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

An old boy of Royal College, Colombo and Harrow School in England, Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy is a renowned Sri Lankan economist and is a former Director of Economic Affairs at the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Earlier, Economy expert - Prof. Lalith Samarakoon, Prime minister's senior advisor - Charitha Ratwatte, CBSL deputy governor - Nandalal Weerasinghe, former deputy governor of the CBSL - W.A. Wijewardena,  Executive Director of the Institute of Policy Studies - Saman Kelegama and Chairman at the National Human Resource Development Council - Dinesh Weerakkody were also reported as contenders to the post.
