'Still not asking for it'

'Still not asking for it' Featured

An Australian photographer has created a project called "Still Not Asking For It" that takes a stand against "rape culture" and sexual assault.

Rory Banwell photographed women and men standing exposed with black tape covering their nipples and wearing black underwear. The striking black and white photographs show powerful messages scrawled on the models' stomachs.

The messages include "Fashion is not an invitation," "alcohol is not an excuse" and "never asking for it."

Banwell hopes to convey through the project the message that a woman is never asking to be raped, sexually assaulted or abused — no matter what they are wearing, what their sexuality is or who they are.

Banwell told Mashable Australia via email that she was inspired to create the project when she found out she was expecting a baby girl — and someone told her husband to "buy a gun." Her daughter Polly was born in November 2014, and she felt compelled to act.

"We were so disappointed that people's initial reactions were that we would need to protect her, purely because of her gender. I was so taken aback by this sentiment that I decided I needed to do 'something,'" Banwell said. "We can do better and we should do better. For ourselves and for our children. I don't want my child growing up in a society that accepts sexual violence, accepts the statistics and won't do anything about it."
