Waraka (ripe jack fruit), a popular fruit among locals is being sold at Jinthupitiya junction in Colombo and the popularity of the stole is such that it has changed the name of the junction into 'Waraka Handiya (junction)'.

“There is not a day which goes by without waraka at the stole. The business is good on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays as the pooja at the kovil is held on those days. Waraka is an essential at every pooja held for Lord Ganesh," says the owner of the shop, Sunil.

He further revealed that not only the locals but also the foreigners visit the stole to taste the juicy and sweet waraka.

"There are different varieties of waraka such as Peni Waraka, Rosa Waraka, Kaha Waraka, La Kaha Waraka and Sudu Waraka. The taste changes according to the variety" he added sharing his experience.

Sunil has been running the waraka stole for the past 20 years. Though the income is low he engages in the trade with much satisfaction.
