Covering up of women’s cricket sex scandal Featured

A situation has arisen in which those accused of soliciting sexual favours from members of the Sri Lanka women’s cricket team go unpunished by law, say Sri Lanka Cricket sources.

SLC secretary Nishantha Ranatunga, who has allegedly been accused of fraud, corruption and irregularities, is one of the persons trying to cover up this scandal, veterans of the game charge.

Several members of the team have given evidence to the disciplinary committees that selector Suchitra Alexander and team manager Roshan Iddamalgoda had intimidated them.

Also, those close to women’s cricket chief Vanessa Bowen are given special privileges, they charged.

Suchitra is also the secretary-in-charge of the stadium belonging to Colts Cricket Club, of which Nishantha is the secretary, and he was appointed a selector with the backing of the SLC secretary.

Nishantha contested the last election of SLC office bearers from Ragama Cricket Club, whose chairman is Iddamalgoda.

As the manager, Iddamalgoda is drawing a montly allowance exceeding Rs. 100,000, but continues to be a member of the executive committee in breach of the cricket constitution and the sports act and earning criticism from experts of the game.
