Steps to deal with human-wild animal conflicts

The wildlife conservation department is taking steps to deal with human-wild animal conflicts, mainly involving elephants.

On a proposal by minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, wildlife control units will be set up for every wildlife zone.

These units will visit scenes of human-wild animal conflicts upon being informed.

Mainly, human-elephant conflicts claim more than 50 humans and over 200 elephants every year.

In addition, conflicts with leopards, crocodiles and monkeys have been reported.

Meanwhile, wildlife officials, supported by the Army, relocated five deer, boar and two jackals from Mattala airport, which they had frequented for nearly three years.

All security fences of the airport have been repaired to prevent wild animals from entering the premises, said airport manager Upul Kalansuriya.
