Southerner to become UPFA general secretary!

The president is considering appointing minister Mahinda Amaraweera as general secretary of the UPFA, a position which remains vacant following the death of Prof. Viswa Warnapala, say political sources.

However, a group of senior SLFP MPs is to request to the president to appoint someone in the joint opposition, in order to prevent the division of the party and the formation of a new party.

Their nominee is said to be Dullas Alahapperuma.

So far, the UPFA and the UNP have had no general secretary hailing from the south.

Both Amaraweera and Alahapperuma are representing the southern province.
