President Rajapaksa tells lies about me - Solheim

Former Norwegian Special Peace Envoy Erik Solheim has yesterday (16) rejected President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s claims that he had covertly financed the Tamil Tigers.

Solheim in a Twitter message said, “President Rajapaksa tells lies about me as election approaches. I will set the truth straight tomorrow (Monday)”.

He was responding to claims made by President Rajapaksa at a political gathering in Kurunegala.

Addressing the gathering, President Rajapaksa said, “they (Norway) gave money to the LTTE. It is the Norwegian government who should investigate. We have evidence on how they funded the terrorists."

Speaking further, the President said Solheim had told him that the LTTE could not be defeated militarily.

Solheim functioned as the Norwegian peace envoy to Sri Lanka from 1999 - 2006.
