Protest to protect People’s Bank

Past and present employees of the People’s Bank staged an agitation in front of Colombo Fort railway station yesterday (27) against attempts to disrupt the bank’s digitization.

Members of the bank staff, management as well as retired employees took part in the public awareness demonstration organized by the Front to Protect the People’s Bank.

The union alleges the disruption of the bank’s digitization is being led by a powerful businessman who owns shares of two private banks.

However, the Lanka Bank Employees’ Union describes the protest as one by opportunists.

Controversy surrounds the purchase of hardware for the digitization of the bank.

Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told parliament on September 20 certain media was blowing the matter out of proportions.
