Vehicle taxes won't be revised at all - Finance Minister

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake has assured that there will be no revision whatsoever of taxes imposed on vehicles in the upcoming the 2017 budget proposals to be presented in parliament on November 10.

The Minister stated this during a meeting with the representatives of the Sri Lanka Vehicle Importers Association held recently at the Ministry of Finance.

Chairman of the Vehicle Importers Association Indika Samapth Merenchige disclosed these details at media conference in Colombo today (21).

Therefore, the minister has said that neither vehicle importers nor the prospective buyers should be in a state of confusion or uncertainty, he added.

“This post budget meeting was convened to brief the vehicle importers about the taxes imposed on vehicles. It was revealed at the discussion that a state of confusion prevails in the vehicle market on the assumption that certain vehicle tax proposals would be revised in the future, " Mr Merenchige said.

Mr Merenchige quoted the minister as to saying that "There is absolutely no basis in this and that there will not be any changes whatsoever in respect of proposals on vehicle imports.".

The minister had called upon the importers as well as buyers to execute their transactions at the current market prices without thinking about future prices.

Mr. Merenchige noted that now it is very clear that none of the taxes imposed on vehicles from the 2016 budget will be revised.

Therefore it is advisable for customers to buy vehicles already imported though their prices have gone up by some margin. But the prices of vehicles imported in the future will be even higher due to the strengthening of yen as a result of upcoming Olympic Games, he said.
