Gandhi Jayanti on 2nd October at Indian Cultural Centre

The India Cultural Centre, Colombo in association with Sri Lanka India Society will celebrate Gandhi Jayanti with a programme to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, on Sunday, October 2, 2016 at 4.00 pm at its auditorium at 16/2 Gregory's Road, Colombo 7.

Dr. K. P. Shankaran, Professor of Philosophy and an eminent educationist from India will deliver a lecture on “Gandhi's Buddhism: A critical analysis”.

Gandhi Jayanti is observed every year on 2nd of October to commemorate the birth anniversary of the late Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. It is an occasion to remember Gandhiji's ideals of truth and non-violence, his philosophy of Satyagraha, and to celebrate his life and recognize his pre-eminent role in gaining India's Independence from colonial rule.The Gandhi Jayanti Celebrations are aimed at disseminating Gandhian philosophy, principles and beliefs. The celebration of Gandhi Jayanti is not confined to India. This day is also observed by the United Nations as the International Day of Non-Violence.

Dr. K. P. Shankaran began his teaching career in the early 1980s at the Madras Christian College, in Chennai,India. In 1985 he moved to Delhi to join the faculty of St. Stephen's College, where he taught both Indian and Western Philosophy. During this time he also gave lectures on "Political Philosophy" "Gandhian Thoughts" and "Philosophy of Science" to post graduate students of the Philosophy & Language Departments of Delhi University. Dr. Shankaran has authored a book titled "Marx and Freud on Religion". He has written articles on Mahatma Gandhi and is currently working on a book on Brancusi, a Romania-born French Sculptor. Dr. Shankaran is also a marathon runner.

The programme will commence with bhajans by faculty members of Performing Arts Unit, University of Kelaniya.
