22 births with unusually small heads Featured

Health authorities are looking into several births with the condition called microcephaly in which the infant’s head is unusually small.

Twenty two such births have been reported in the past seven months, community health specialist Dr. Kapila Jayawardena said.

Inherent diseases, viral infections and other causes can result in this condition, he said.

The mothers of these 22 infants had not been overseas during pregnancy.

Research will be conducted in the next two years with foreign assistance into this matter, Dr. Jayawardena added.
