Extortionist prevents road construction in Aranayake

Extortionist prevents road construction in Aranayake Featured

There has been a delay in the carpeting of four main roads at Aranayake in Kegalle under World Bank assistance, as the subconstractors had been extorted money since the time of the previous regime.

The contractor, Nawaloka Construction, has been using subcontractors, who are being supplied by a person by the name Kaduwela Roshan.

This man is demanding a 20 per cent cut, with the aid of UDA officials, to handover the projects to subcontractors.

Most subcontractors have agreed to pay the money, but are not agreeable to a demand by him to give him the roadside trees felled for the projects.

Now, he is refusing to give them the subcontracts.

Reached over the phone, several subcontractors confirmed the issue which prevents the carpeting of the roads at Aranayake.

When a phone call was given by a mole to the UDA project officer Lakshman Bandara, he said Kaduwela Roshan was well-known to him.

Bandara went onto say that he could get the road construction contracts at Aranayake and elsewhere, and asked to see him at his office at Aranayake town.
