The Welikada prison complex comprises four sections, and a proposal to acquire a land in Horana for this purpose was approved by government authorities.

Most prisons in Sri Lanka are located in key towns and on land with high economic value.

The present Government, under the program of relocating prisons in the country, has decided to relocate the Welikada prison and its sub sections.
